Known as the ancient capital of 7 dynasties with a history of 2,752 years, Kaifeng is one of the 24 famous historical and cultural cities authorized by the State Council of China and one of the 8 Chinese ancient capital cities. Especially in Northern Song Dynasty, with more than 1 million citizens, Kaifeng was not only the national political, economic and cultural center, but also an international metropolis, famous for its prosperity and galmour.
Kaifeng has 274 protected cultural relics, among which, 38 are of provincial level and 13 sites, including the relics of Kaifeng city in Northern Song Dynasty and Kaifeng City Wall, are enlisted under national protection. Kaifeng boasts 23 provincial level intangible cultural heritages, including Diyilou's steamed stuffed bun, Youyixin's carp with hand pulled noodles and Guan porcelain, another 7, Zhuxianzhen's woodcut new year painting, Bian embroidery, Pangu drum dance and Zhang Family's lantern, etc., are national intangible cultural heritages. It is a world wonder that relics of another 6 cities, from different dynasties and piled one on top of the other, all buried underneath today's Kaifeng.
Kaifeng enjoys profund culture. As the birthplace of Song Dynasty Culture, Kaifeng has longstanding influence on the Central Plain Culture. The prosperity of Kaifeng in history has been truthfully recorded in the long scroll painting Revierside Scene on Qingming Festival by Zhang Zeduan, a painter of Northern Song Dynasty and the journal Dreamlike Glory of Kaifeng by Meng Yuanlao. Kaifeng is known by the world as the hometown of traditional opera, calligraphy and painting, woodcut new year painting, Pangu drum dance and chryscanthermum.
